Why Mock Exams Matter

Why Mock Exams Matter

After our recent mock exam session last Sunday, I was reminded again of just how valuable these experiences are for children preparing for 7+, 8+, 11+, GCSEs and beyond. Parents often ask why mock exams are so important — here are some of the key reasons:

  • A true test under pressure – A child who performs confidently at home or in lessons may react very differently in an unfamiliar setting, under timed conditions, surrounded by other children. Mocks highlight how well they cope with these pressures and give them a chance to practise in a safe environment before the real thing.
  • Independent insight – As parents and tutors, we see children regularly in familiar contexts. A mock exam provides an external measure of progress, often revealing strengths or weaknesses that aren’t obvious in everyday lessons.
  • Essential exam technique – Success in exams isn’t just about knowledge; it’s also about skills like reading instructions carefully, pacing work, checking answers, and staying focused. These skills only improve with practice.
  • A cycle of progress – One mock is helpful, but two are far better. Sitting a first exam highlights the problem areas; the weeks in between give children time to work on those skills; and the second mock (like our November session) allows them to apply what they’ve learned and show progress.

For children, mocks are not about scores but about experience, resilience, and preparation. Each one gives them the tools and confidence to walk into the real exam feeling ready to do their very best.

Is your child taking 7+ exams this year? I have one more mock exam session available to book. Details here: https://educationpathfinder.co.uk/mock-exams/

Other London preps, including The Village School for Girls in Belsize Park and Falcons School in Putney, have also...
